Birthday Thanks

Posted by Roberto Macedo Alves on Sep 12, 2011 in Happy Birthday

Today I received so many nice messages from friends, family, coworkers, special people, friends, students, artists, customers, friends … and I wanted to thank you all with a tiny photo from my sketchbook – with a simple message – in Portuguese, English and Spanish.

I was really moved about so many people (that I know personally) took the time to write on my facebook wall to wish me a happy birthday.

And happy it was indeed, surrounded with family members and good friends – doing what I love.

MANY MANY THANKS!

If you have a facebook page, you probably have already seen this:

This year I’m donating to a good cause: Fight Prostate Cancer

Donate-top

$50 of $170 raised for Fight Prostate Cancer

This is why I’m donating my birthday:

This particular cause is something I really care about.

This is my cause:

Fight Prostate Cancer

Fight Prostate Cancer
Mission: Support the research and fight against prostate cancer

From prostatecancerfoundation.org • Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in America. • In 2006, over 232,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and over 30,000 men will die from it. • One new case occurs every 2.5 minutes and a man dies from prostate cancer every 17 minutes. • After lung cancer, prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men in the U.S. • A nonsmoking man is more likely to get prostate cancer than lung, bronchus, colon, rectal, bladder, lymphoma, melanoma, oral and kidney cancers combined. • African-American men are 65% more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer than Caucasian- Americans and are more than twice as likely to die from it. The reasons for this disparity are not yet known. • It is estimated that there are over 2 million American men currently living with prostate cancer. • However, every year, 70,000 men require additional treatment due to a recurrence of prostate cancer. • Because prostate cancer is a relatively slow-growing cancer, the 5-year survival rate for prostate cancer diagnosed at all stages is 98%. The relative 10-year survival rate is 84% and the 15-year survival rate is 56%. • The chance of having prostate cancer increases rapidly after age 50. More than 70% of all prostate cancers are diagnosed in men over the age of 65. It is still unclear why this increase with age occurs for prostate cancer. • The only well-established risk factors for prostate cancer are age, ethnicity and family history of the disease; however, high dietary fat intake may also be a significant risk factor. A recent study shows that the risk of dying from prostate cancer increases with body weight. • The Prostate Cancer Foundation has raised over $245 million.

This is why I care:

Because my father died from this insidious illness, every effort is necessary to fight this. About 1 man in 6 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. Early diagnose and prevention is vital!

This is what I’m asking of my friends:

Donate-middle

I’m asking for $34, or whatever you can afford!

As I am getting older, I realize that material things are less and less relevant, after all – my shelves are almost full, anyway – so, in case you are interested, in case of giving me material stuff, consider donating to this cause.

Thanks!

Wikipedia says that John Milton was an English poet, prose, polemicist and civil servant for the Commonwealth of England. He is best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost, and for his treatise condemning censorship, Areopagitica.

He was born on 9 December 1608, which means today is his exact 400th Birthday! YAY!

Here is a Gustave Doré engraving of Satan – done as an illustration for Paradise Lost:

And here is a William Blake watercolor of Satan watching the caresses of Adam and Eve:
